March 14th, 2019 was our annual ‘Pi Day’ celebration at our high school which meant our favorite jingle would be performed during morning announcements. It was loud, tinny, and the lyrics were nearly unintelligible; except the chorus which chanted “It’s Pi Day!” over and over. It was such an earworm that, seven years later, we still find ourselves bugging each other with the song from time to time. March 14th, 2019 was also the day we officially started dating, which is how a high school math jingle ended up becoming “our song”. Still, the timing could not have been more perfect. Just a few days later, we set off on a school trip to Italy. We enjoyed our first date in Rome, nervously chatting over pizza and gelato. On that same trip, while watching the moon glitter over the Bacino di San Marco, we shared our first kiss. But before Pi Day or Italy, our relationship really began as two friends sitting in the back of an English classroom. We were the classmates earning dirty looks from the teacher for talking too much in class. We would debate personality test results, swap our favorite music, and share all of the latest high school drama. Notoriously, we would keep and compare tally marks representing filler words used in class, placing bets on how many we would count by the end of class (nevermind the actual lesson). Since then, it’s hard to say that much has changed. We’ve pulled off long distance, college, and a move to Virginia to start our careers. We’ve celebrated birthdays and Christmases, packed up a few U-Hauls, and found new favorite restaurants. But at our core, we remain two best friends, filling every moment with humor, countless new passion projects, and finding genuine love while existing in each other’s orbit. As we count down the days to our marriage, what matters most to us is continuing to show up for each other the way we always have: with love, empathy, humor, and friendship.
